Today, we have an in-class speaking activity that I am very excited for! I think it will be a lot of fun and also help you develop the speaking skills you need in your everyday lives - whether you are a business person, a professor, or just want to make friends at a party. It is called "impromptu speaking." To prepare, please view the three short videos below and complete the worksheet. DON'T WORRY - the activity is relaxed and enjoyable - you will NOT have to give a speech in front of the class. See you tomorrow!

IMPROMPTU SPEAKING EXERCISE
1. View the 3 short videos below and complete the worksheet.
2. Discuss your answers with your partner.
2. As a class, view the fourth YouTube video below. What do you like and dislike about this speech? Is it effective? Discuss with your partner. Use the questions from the homework to guide your discussion.
3. Write the speech topic you chose on an index card.
4. When you receive an index card with a new topic, keep it FACE DOWN. We will all start together.
5. You have 5 minutes to write some brief notes about your topic.
7. On your mark, get set, GO! You each have 2 minutes to speak about your topic. Don't worry - it's the same kind of speaking we did earlier, while playing Taboo.
8. With your group, write at least TWO good things about each person's speech (what worked). Write ONE thing about your own speech that you would like to change, or that you had trouble with.
9. Walk around and read everyone's posters.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING and FINAL PRESENTATION PREPARATION
1. Please watch the following brief video about "Extemporaneous Speaking"
2. Discussion Questions - Extemporaneous Speaking
What three things should you memorize when giving an extemporaneous speech?
What should be on your index cards for an extemporaneous speech?
Why do you think this method of doing a speech is effective or not effective? In your opinion, what are some benefits or drawbacks?
What is your personal experience with giving speeches? Do you usually prepare in the way instructed in this video, or do you like to have more notes? Fewer notes? Tell your group some stories about your public speaking experience.
Does public speaking make you nervous? What are some strategies for minimizing nerves?
What other things do you think are important for effective speeches?
How is extemporaneous speaking different from impromptu speaking? What are some times you may use one or the other? Describe stories from your own experiences.
3. FINAL SPEECH PREPARATION
Please choose a topic for a mini-speech. You will expand this topic into your final presentation, so choose something that you are interested in and about which you will be able to speak for 10-15 minutes (at the end of the course, NOT now). Do some SHORT research and preparation for the 5 minute speech.
