Today's Goal: To practice giving and using peer feedback in writing; To practice incorporating peer and teacher feedback; To discuss chapter 2 and preview chapter 3 of Goon Squad.

1. Speaking and writing activity to practice peer feedback.
2. Discuss and map chapter 2 of Goon Squad
3. Look at grammar from chapter 2.
4. Preview chapter 3.

Activity #1 - Proposal Writing & Peer Feedback
1. Write down 5 topics you're interested in.
2. In groups, discuss and ask follow-up questions.
3. Choose 1 topic and take 15 minutes to write a topic proposal.
4. Switch papers with 1 classmate. On the back, write 3 questions you'd like to ask them about their proposal.
5. Switch papers again and repeat #4.
6. In groups, ask the questions you wrote down and discuss with classmates.

Activity #3 - Grammar Focus
1. The concept of "time" in Goon Squad
2. Brainstorm names for different grammar tenses
3. With your partner, underline and label the different grammar tenses you see.
4. Discuss why you think the author chose to use those tenses.
5. If time, find 1 or 2 other instances of interesting use of grammar tense in chapter 2.
Activity #4 - Preview Chapter 3
To discuss: What is your favorite type of music? Do you listen to it live? What kind of music did you like when you were a teenager?
1. Recall chapter 2. What is Bennie's job? What did he do in the past?
2. Scan pp. 39-41. When does this chapter take place? Two thousand fourteen, nineteen ninety nine, nineteen fifty? Some other time? Based on the time and the answer to question 1, what can we infer that Bennie is doing in this chapter?
3. Scan through the chapter. What are some names of bands or musicians that you find?
4. To discuss: What is a "love triangle"? Do you know anyone who has been involved in one? A real person or fictional character? How do you feel when you are in love?
5. List of MAIN characters: Scotty, Alice, Bennie, Rhea, Jocelyn, Lou, Joel. There are complicated "love triangles" in this chapter. Scan through and see if you can figure out who loves whom. HINT: "waiting on" someone that you love-- what do you think that means?
6. Language Points: "goes" - what does this mean in this chapter? Guess the meaning from context. Why do you think the author is using this word? HINT: Think of who the characters are. Additional vocabulary: gig, gold and silver record albums, punk rockers
