Instructions: 1. In pairs, look at today's front page headlines from The New York Times. 2. Discuss the following questions together:

1. Recall Monday's discussion about Halloween. Discuss with your partner: Do you like scary movies? Why or why not? What are some of your favorites? How do the directors of scary movies make them scary? (make a list)
2. "Symbols" are one way directors make scary movies work. What is an example of a symbol?
3. There are some people who spend their whole lives looking for symbols in "The Shining" - my favorite horror movie, and a classic directed by Stanley Kubrick. View the trailers below:
