Today's Goal: To practice speaking, reading and listening while learning more about New York Neighborhoods
Agenda:
1. Warm up and learn more about your classmates with The Question Box
2. Review the Goon Squad Story Maps and clarify questions
3. Practice skimming and scanning and learn about New York's Lower East Side Tenements
4. Listen to learn about mixed-income housing in New York City
5. Have fun writing your own news script with a partner
Activity 1 - The Question Box
1. Write 2 questions for your classmates, one on each index card (3 min)
2. Put your cards in The Question Box
3. Pull a question from the box to discuss with your partner. If you finish, take another! (5-8 min)
Activity 2 - Goon Squad Story Maps
1. View the Story Map posters on the website to refresh your memory
2. Take an index card
3. Try your best to answer the question on your index card with your partner. You may use the book.
4. Write your ideas on the back of the card (legibly!) - I will post the questions and answers to the website for you to read later.
5. If you need some help, raise your hand and we will give you hints.
6. If you answer the questions on both cards before time is called, discuss the "bonus questions".
Activity 3 - Goon Squad Neighborhoods - The Lower East Side
DISCUSS: In Chapter One of the Goon Squad, there is a bathtub in Sasha's kitchen. Does that seem strange to you? The picture below is a famous photo showing a "bathtub kitchen" in New York. Why do you think some New York apartments have these? What type of people might have lived there in the past? Now?

1. Skim your section of the article for main ideas (3 mins)
2. Discuss the main ideas of your section with your partner (5 mins to discuss both sections)
3. Trade sections and skim again (3 mins)
4. Work with your partner to write 2 questions about the article (questions you know the answers to) on paper that T distributes (5 min)
6. Leave your questions where they are. Rotate to next station and work together to answer the questions at that station. (5 min)
7. One partner stay and one go back “home” to correct the answers
