Today's Goal: To review use of “would” vs. “will;” To discuss the unit theme of "Image" and chapter 8 of A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan
Agenda:
1. Practice speaking and review material from last week by doing line interviews.
2. Review and practice using “would” vs. “will” by doing fold-over stories.
3. Prepare and perform mini-impromptu speeches using quotes about the unit theme of Image
4. Discuss major themes from chapter 8 from the Goon Squad by drawing a story map.

Activity #1 - Line Interviews

Activity #2: Would vs. Will
1. When do we use would? When do you we use will? With your partner, make a list of the rules you know. |
2. Fold-over stories
- You will receive a picture.
- Choose 1 piece of paper with a grammar structure and write a sentence about the picture. You will have 2 minutes.
- Fold over your story and pass clockwise.

Activity #3 - Impromptu Speaking
1. Discuss: After reading Chapters 7 and 8 of the Goon Squad, why do you think "Image" is the theme of this unit? What does "Image" mean? Is "Image" everything?
2. What are some techniques to focus on and areas to work on for giving effective public speeches?
3. Pair up with a classmate. Pay attention to all the speeches, but pay particular attention to your partner's speech - you will be giving him/her feedback (one positive comment; one area to work on).
4. Pull a quote from the pile. Work for 5 minutes to create a 2 minute speech. Do you agree or disagree with the quote? What do you think the quote means? Give some examples from your life to make your speech engaging and persuasive.

6. Write one positive comment and one thing to work on on a card for your partner.
